Shambles

The last couple of months it feels like I’ve been everywhere. Plenty of smaller projects ticked off the list and it’s been nice to have plenty of variety in there.

A proud moment for me, was getting the opportunity to work on York’s oldest street, The Shambles!

The old lime plaster on a stair wall had delaminated after a leak and needed removing and replacing. My traditional mix of quicklime, sand and horsehair was used so as to be in keeping with the age of the property.

A further job on the shambles included a plaster patch but required some timber laths fitting first. While not the biggest job, it was great to be able to use more traditional methods on this old street.

Elsewhere, I’ve been plastering living rooms, kitchens and many other rooms with normal gypsum which is a nice change of pace as lime can take quite a bit longer to do.

It’s also been nice to have a friend on many of the jobs, my dog Bean is great company

My next larger project is already underway too. Morley’s Terrace is a cottage built in 1877 and is the latest example of earth lime used in the village. As such, many of the walls here are being plastered with earth lime mortar.

So far the earth lime has been a dream to use, I look forward to sharing more as this job progresses.
